The 2009–15 model years use an open differential paired with a brake-assisted “automatic limited slip” rear differential, which functions similarly to a VSC system.A transponder key, also known as a Chipped Key, is a key that has a computer chip inside of it. Mechanical limited-slip differentials were standard on the 2005–08 model years. The second level contains the preceding but also includes a towing kit (oil and transmission coolers, fan clutch), as well as a heavy-duty high-output alternator and battery. The entry-level trim includes a color-matched grille, color-matched front/rear bumpers/door handles/mirrors, and a hood with a nonfunctional scoop, Bilstein shocks/struts, a stainless steel exhaust tip, and aluminum 17-inch wheels with 265/65R17 tires. The TRD Sport package is available in two configurations. TRD also provided seat covers for these Tacomas, however they were only available for the 2005–08 versions (the 2009–15 vehicles include airbags in the seats, whereas the 2005–08 models do not). Additionally, TRD cosmetic components are available, including an aluminum front skid plate, shift knobs (A/T and M/T), a radiator cap, an oil filler cap, and an exhaust tip. Through Toyota dealerships, TRD supplied a cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust system. A dealer-installed TRD supercharger was available for the 1GR-FE. Both variations have TRD-exclusive seats and bed-mounted 400-watt AC power inverters. Both are available in 2WD or 4WD configurations, with the Off-Road model featuring a rear electronic locking differential. The Sport is aimed at improving on-road performance, and the Off-Road is aimed towards off-road enthusiasts. The Toyota Tacoma is available in two TRD trim levels: Sport and Off-Road.
